§ 1-1-1-12. DEFINITIONS; GRAMMATICAL CONSTRUCTION.

  • (A) For the purposes of this code, the words, terms and phrases defined herein shall have the meanings as stated in the definitions. Any word, term or phrase not specifically defined herein shall have the meaning that the word, term or phrase is commonly accorded in ordinary usage.
    (B) When not inconsistent with the context, words used in the present tense include the future, words used in the plural number include the singular, and words used in the singular number include the plural. The word “may” is always permissive and not mandatory. The word “shall” is always mandatory and not merely permissive. Nouns and pronouns of the masculine gender shall include the feminine, and nouns and pronouns of the feminine gender shall include the masculine unless the context clearly indicates otherwise for legally valid and sufficient reasons.
